| COMMENTS FROM JANUARY 24TH CRIME MEETING
Email List Below A BRIEF MESSAGE FROM HENRY HARRY AND BISHOP RON ALLEN We want to personally thank each of you who answered the call and attended our community crime meeting on January 24th 2010. Anyone in attendance can attest to the power, seriousness and commitment of the people in the room. It is truly note worthy that we had people there who are doing work all around the city and county. It was especially pleasing to see such a strong showing by local church leaders. Looking around the world, we see growing turmoil in other countries. While America has an overall sense of internal peace, many know we have experienced what amounts to “localized wars” in some parts of our cities. In these largely minority areas persistent poverty contributes to general violence, gun violence, drug trafficking and drug influenced disorder; and all of this culminates in the death and imprisonment of generations of kids. If we continue to work together, overcome our personal fear, set aside (for a moment) our personal financial interest, re-evaluate some of our political ties and commit to an unwavering fight to help our kids, 2011 will be an extraordinary year for Sacramento. Following is a summarization of our survey and individual topics discussed in groups. These items were identified as the top three things law enforcement can do better: Ø Partner with churches (94.7%) Ø Increase focus on drug dealing (42.1%) Ø Hire officers for assignment to high crime areas (36.8%) These items were identified as the top three things community members should do better: Ø Volunteer and mentor (73.6%) Ø Support creative intervention programs (57.8%) Ø Better parenting (47.3%) Respondents in our conversations on specific topics revealed the following, in summary: What are the biggest causes of youth violence? Ø Living in economically depressed communities Ø Single parent families – absent fathers Ø Lack of direction and strong social values Ø Learned behavior from family or friends Ø Peer pressure Ø Isolation Ø Abusive environment Ø Lack of a sense of power In what ways should we engage our youth? Ø Provide summer jobs Ø Access to youth oriented clubs, programs and church youth groups Ø Access to sports and recreation programs Ø Civic engagement programs Ø Create a larger community based organizations presence with open door policy How do we engage community members? Ø Request help and build community-wide data base of volunteers Ø Include faith based participation Ø Engage them through outreach from the schools Ø Recruit through use of doctors’ offices, beauty salons and barbershops What can law enforcement do different or better? Ø “Let the people know that they really care” Ø Improve communication with the community Ø Make diversity a priority in hiring new officers Ø Work on building trust in the community Ø Develop strong youth intervention strategies Ø Less rudeness How should we go about getting a law enforcement, gang, and/or intervention tax? Ø Develop a video and Facebook campaign Ø Let people know how much it is needed through Public Service Announcements (PSAs) Ø Start petition process EMAIL CONTACTS wearethepeople13@yahoo.com,sacramentorespond@gemail.com,leahsblessed@yahoo.com,tomj990@hotmail.com mikeklagenbog@sbcglobal.net,krazy_sac_ladz@yahoo.com,kaydaly@aol.com,timothy.f.boyd@usace.army.mil,dr.white3000@yahoo.com ttmalone@gmail.com,lisaboo_916@yahoo.com,cpr4mercy@yahoo.com,destiny4love94@yahoo.com,slebrane@yahoo.com bishopdrbjfortejr@yahoo.com,john.pruitt31@yahoo.com,ladygailifbc@yahoo.com,rhondaerwin3@yahoo.com,lnstanley01@yahoo.com teenpreacher@sbcglobal.net,johnson_eddie@sbcglobal.net,ranchoal34@sbcglobal.net,thegardens@sbcglobal.net,ibigred@sbcglobal.net rodfiles@hotmail.com,bkimthomas@hotmail.com,pdav722@aol.com,keepprayeralive@gmail.com,dianne@ahmi4u.org rayfordjohnson@mac.com,aomoc@juno.com,ginger@delpaso.seta.net |
